Step-by-Step Instructions for Coffee and Walnut Cake
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (180°C) and line two 8-inch round cake tins with parchment paper.
  2. Cream the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy, about 3 to 5 minutes.
  3. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing thoroughly after each addition until smooth.
  4. Fold in the self-raising flour and instant espresso powder gently, then stir in milk until just combined.
  5. Fold in the chopped walnuts and divide the batter between the prepared tins.
  6. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes until a toothpick inserted comes out clean. Cool for 15 minutes.
  7. Prepare the buttercream by dissolving the espresso powder in water and then mixing it with the icing sugar and butter.
  8. Assemble the cake by layering the cake layers with buttercream and decorating with walnuts.
