Ingredients

Meat Mixture
  • 1 pound ground beef Provides rich flavor; substitute with ground turkey for a lighter option.
  • 1/2 pound ground pork Adds moisture; use additional ground beef or turkey for a leaner dish.
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped Enhances flavor; shallots or leeks can be swapped for a milder taste.
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs Binds the mixture; opt for gluten-free for a gluten-free alternative.
  • 1/2 cup milk Moisture enhancer; use almond milk or non-dairy options for lactose-free.
  • 1 large egg Binds ingredients; a flax egg serves as a vegan substitute.
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce Infuses umami; soy sauce or a vegan alternative can be used.
  • 2 teaspoons salt Essential for seasoning; adjust based on dietary preferences.
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper Adds warmth and spice.
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder Complements the meat flavor.
Topping
  • 2 cups mashed potatoes Adds a creamy layer; swap with cauliflower for a low-carb version.
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese Melts beautifully; mozzarella is milder, or try pepper jack for a spicy kick.
